Doge's Palace - Venice
|
The Doge's Palace is one of the symbols of the city of Venice, masterpiece of gothic art, is located in Piazza San Marco; the building of the palace began probably in the 9th century, but the complex underwent a first great restoration, that transformed the original fortress in an elegant palace, in the 12th century, and in 1340 the palace began a radical transformation to the current shape.
Famous are the prisons of the Palace: some are underground, extremely humid and unhealthy, destined to the poor prisoners. This part is named Pozzi (wells). At the last floor of the Palace there were the Piombi: here were locked up the noble, rich or religious prisoners.
After the building of the new prisons, was built also a bridge, that connected them to the Palace (seat of the law court ), the famous Bridge of Sighs.
In 1923 the Palace became a museum: today it accommodates important works of Italian and European artists, among which Tintoretto, Hieronymus Bosch, Paolo Veronese.
